Dear Lady Juliet,
Thank you for explaining the history of the witch’s tongue. One of my acquaintances recently visited me on a flying carpet, and I was wondering if you could write about them and how they’re enchanted?
Thanks again,

Dear Mr. Thyme,
What a curious coincidence! An acquaintance of mine also traveled by flying carpet not long ago. We must both have acquaintances who are wealthy or wide travelers, as flying carpets are rather expensive and not common in Calatini. Flying carpets are used more in the Tsarkan Empire, where they were first created, but they’re still rare enchanted objects. Seven-league boots are much more affordable and practical as well as less noticeable.
Flying carpets are expensive and rare because their enchantment must be woven into them during their creation, rather than casting it onto an already created carpet. There is a guild in the Tsarkan Empire that exclusively creates flying carpets, and the loom witches there train for years to perfect their art. This guild is protective of its secrets, although other witches can weave flying carpets if they study the enchantment on other carpets long enough (and can weave a carpet that doesn’t unravel.) Fortunately, most witches are able to renew the enchantment on flying carpets, so flying carpets don’t need to be returned to their creator for that.
Since most flying carpets are created in the Tsarkan Empire, they often have arabesques and are richly colored. Most are large enough several people sitting cross-legged, although only the person who activates the enchantment can steer the flying carpet. However, using flying carpets is fairly simple, similar to using communication mirrors. Typically, there is a word to activate the flying carpet, a word to deactivate it, and a word to recharge it. Traveling by flying carpet is swift, about four times faster than a trotting horse.
Sincerely,
Lady Juliet, Royal Witch of Calatini
