Curses

Dear Lady Juliet,
Thank you for your information and advice about love spells. I’ll definitely avoid using those. Thinking of dangerous spells, what can you tell me about curses? And what is the best way to break them?
Thanks again,

Dear Mr. Thyme,
Curses are more than just dangerous spells—they’re evil ones typically cast by black witches that cause harm, misfortune, and/or death to the focus(es) of the spell. (Regular witches can cast curses too if greatly distressed, but if casting their curse doesn’t kill them, they usually become black witches afterward.) Like with other spells, curses can be created through the different orders of magic, use various ingredients, and must be periodically renewed to maintain them.
How to break curses depends on how they were originally cast, but that typically requires the same number/class of witch(es) used to create the curse as well as the same order(s) of magic. Also, only witches outside a curse can break it (unless the curse is specifically designed so that the focus(es) actions will do so.) However, if curses are not renewed, breaking them is unnecessary, as they will gradually fade until they disappear. Also, some black witches provide their curses’ victims with riddles that can help break their curse to torment their victims, although unraveling those riddles can be thorny, baffling, and often misleading.
You can also consult other witches about breaking curses. Most witches can sense ordinary curses and determine how to break them using a probing spell. However, powerful curses cast by Rhiannon-descendant black witches are only visible to seers, and are often equally grueling to break. (Even other Rhiannon descendants can’t detect powerful curses when reading auras or casting probing spells.) Also, most powerful curses have methods for renewing them built into them, so they often grow more and more powerful as they age and become even more impossible to break. Some curses are so powerful that breaking them can permanently drain the powers of the witch(es) breaking them or even kill the curse breaker(s).
Before I send my reply, I must ask—what made you leap from love spells to curses? Are you the victim of a curse? Or do you know someone who is? If so, please contact me about breaking that curse, and I shall be glad to help. And if the curse is powerful and I can’t detect it, I have recently met a seer who can provide assistance.
Sincerely,
Lady Juliet, Royal Witch of Calatini

P.S. I didn’t describe curses cast by gods or their avatars because those aren’t at all the same as those cast by black witches. Holy curses aren’t evil, and any harm they do is to teach the focus(es) much needed lessons. Focus(es) can typically break holy curses themselves once they learn those lessons, and any prophecies/riddles about holy curses are straightforward in the light of those lessons. Truthfully, holy curses are the same as holy blessings, except holy curses initially seem negative, while holy blessings appear positive from the start.
