Firegems
from Verna’s Customs of Calatini
Firegems are magical jewels made of hardened dragon flame, and they come in any color of the rainbow as well as neutral colors. The dragon flame trapped inside firegems continually flickers, making firegems striking and enchanting jewels. However, firegems only possess residual magic, so they’re harmless with no magical cost.
Only dragons can create or alter firegems, although rumors persist that some Rhiannon descendant nature witches or powerful elves can alter them as well. Supposedly, dragons create firegems in their drake form by breathing fire then using their magic to harden their flame into jewels; however, dragons are rare and extremely private, so no one but dragons know this for certain.
Firegems became popular in Calatini during the ninth century after the dragon Azar chose King Blair’s sister, Princess Treasa, as his mate and transformed her into a female dragon. After her successful transformation, Princess Treasa bestowed many firegems on her family and friends before she left with her mate.
Firegems were one of the first magical items considered faegifts besides items enchanted by faes once faegifts began in the tenth century. However, since dragons are rare, firegems are incredibly expensive, so only the affluent can afford them. Many exquisite firegem jewelry pieces are passed down as family heirlooms.
