Summary
An adorable, rambunctious cat, coincidentally called Kat with a K, bounds onstage from the wings. She tumbles into the Pool of Tongues and gains the ability to speak, but being a cat, she does not deign to favor most humans. Kat wanders about the Enchanted Forest teasing dryads and other forest denizens.
One day Kat wanders into a village bordering the Forest. When a boy bumbles into the other villagers and knocks them down, Kat is attracted to the commotion and laughs aloud. Scared by a talking cat, the villagers hunt Kat until the boy claims he was the one who laughed. As the villagers wander away, the boy gives Kat half a meat pie, and Kat vows he is her master until death.
Kat and her master romp about the stage having many adventures. Unfortunately they wander into an Evil Queen’s kingdom, and Kat’s clever tongue attracts the Evil Queen’s notice, who appears onstage with a fearsome noise. The Queen’s soldiers capture Kat and her master then toss them with the Queen’s slaves.
The Queen’s abused handmaiden comes to tend Kat’s and the boy’s wounds, and the girl and boy instantly fall in love. As the pair stare soulfully into each other’s eyes, Kat slips from the slave’s cage and scouts their escape. That night, Kat drags her master from the Evil Queen’s kingdom.
Once they escape, the boy begs Kat to return so they can rescue his love. Reluctantly swayed by his ardor, Kat agrees to return. Kat and her master slip back into the Evil Queen’s kingdom and study their enemy. Discovering the Queen’s favorite means of execution is poisoned candies, Kat saunters into the Queen’s court and helps her master trick the Evil Queen into eating one.
The Evil Queen perishes, and her handmaiden is revealed to be the true princess of the kingdom who had been forced to be the Queen’s maid after the Evil Queen had conquered her kingdom. Kat’s master begs the Princess to marry him, and she happily accepts and knights Kat. Kat’s master and the Princess wed, and the entire kingdom celebrates with a marriage ball.
