Nature Witches
a summary written by Daphne, Lady Ravenstone for her son Dare
As nature witches, our powers work similarly to other witches—we use the five orders of magic to perform spells, and we see magic as a white glow but can’t sense most inactive magic. However, we can always recognize another nature witch or if a spell was created by a nature witch. Out of the other classes of witches, we are most similar to witch healers and sea witches, although our powers overlap with other classes as well. The most famous nature witch was the Earth King, who was also a Rhiannon descendant, although not related to us.
Closely connected to the natural world, nature witches draw our power from nature, both from the land itself as well as the plants and creatures of the living world. Unlike other witches, we can gather natural energy to replenish our magic as well as bolster our physical health, and we must regularly gather natural energy to feel balanced and connected to nature. However, even though we can bolster our physical health with natural energy, we must always remember to still maintain our health by eating properly, getting enough sleep, and the like.
Nature witches often rely on natural objects for our spells, which usually involve nature, strength, potential, energy, love, abundance, and growth. We respect the processes of nature and every living thing, no matter how small. And we need nature around us to feel complete, so few settle in cities. The powers of many nature witches are tied to the seasons and often most powerful during spring and summer.
Nature witches also adore wild (or natural) magic, so although Magehaven has the most witches in Calatini, more nature witches prefer living in Wildewall because its magic is wilder. (‘Tis why I chose to settle here and met your father.) Our powers work much better in Wildewall’s magical glens, enchanted lakes, and vision summits than elsewhere. Plus, the kingdoms of magical creatures are just north of the Walle, so we can easily trade with them.
Not all nature witches share the same powers, but our powers fall into two broad types: land magic and living magic. Most nature witches favor one type or the other, and some only have the one. More powerful nature witches possess more abilities (as well as their spells are stronger.)
Our land magic involves the stones, minerals, and gems of the land as well as other natural, nonliving elements or processes. This includes earth magic where we move the earth with our minds (like controlling earthquakes, building land formations, etc.) We also have weather magic where we predict and alter the weather. Crystal magic, water magic, and the like are also forms of land magic.
Our living magic involves plants and creatures as well as the cycle of life. This includes herbal magic where we encourage plants to flourish as well as use them for spells. We also have creature magic, which includes communicating with creatures as well as using their energy for spells. For consensual adults, we’ll also use blood magic or sex magic like fertility charms, lust spells, and bloodbindings, but no one must ever be harmed with these types of spells. (Only black witches do that.)
As Rhiannon descendants, our powers extend far beyond most nature witches, and our line has always been particularly powerful. Unlike many, we can perform most forms of nature magic, and our powers aren’t tied to the seasons. We can attempt magic many other witches can’t, like communicating with melissae or altering firegems. (Typically only dragons themselves can alter the hardened dragon flame trapped inside firegems, but our family has always been able to do so.) We can also perform aura spells, but even if we don’t, we’re sensitive to the active magic of others if it impacts nature (like witch healers, soul healers, sea witches, etc.), although we can only tell what their magic is by using an aura spell. (But to do so is an intrusion, so ’tis best not to unless imperative.)
