The Power of Names
To Lady Juliet, Royal Witch of Calatini

Dear Lady Juliet,
Thank you for explaining how different classes of witches are determined. And thanks for your kind words about witches who aren’t one of the special witch classes—as an ordinary witch myself, I found that very comforting.
My mentors just taught me how to enchant paired transport boxes. Would you mind using the enclosed transport box to exchange letters going forward? Although the magical transport system for letters and small parcels run by the Ministry of Health and Community allows us to exchange letters as often as twice a month, being able to exchange letters weekly would be wonderful. I’ve grown to love receiving your interesting letters, and they’ve helped me more than I can express over the past year.
As to my question for today… My mentors recently mentioned that full names are important when casting spells focusing on someone. Could you explain why?
Thanks again,

Dear Mr. Thyme,
I’ll gladly use the enclosed transport box. Excellent work on the spell, by the way—’tis one of the most precise and powerful I’ve ever seen, which just proves my “kind words” about ordinary witches. Plus, the carved walnut box is exquisite and must have been quite expensive. Thank you for such an extravagant faegift.
Full names are important for casting spells because they represent a specific person—their life, their history, their soul. Knowing someone’s true name also allows you to scry or trace them easier, unravel their magic, or save them from spells threatening them.
The power of names is enhanced if the witch can picture the person while casting their spell, especially if they know them intimately. But since the magical link between a person and their name isn’t as strong as their hair or blood, ’tis better to use those to set the focus of a spell—or best yet, all three. However, powerful Rhiannon descendants only require names to set a focus.
Hope all this helps you, and I look forward to your reply tomorrow. I’ve grown to enjoy receiving your letters as well. ‘Tis been fascinating to correspond about magic with you and learn a bit about your life on the other side of Calatini.
Sincerely,
Lady Juliet, Royal Witch of Calatini
