The Council
The Council
from Parkstone’s The History of Damensea
Formed by Calator within a month of his coronation, the council has been advisors to the king and ministers of state during all of Calatini’s history. The council contains twelve members, one for each of Calatini’s duchies.
Councilors are nominated by the ruling families of each duchy every five years. Nominees are often the duke, duchess, their heir, or other relatives, but on rare occasions they have been exceptional individuals unrelated to their duke. Once the ruling families elect their nominees, the king approves or vetoes them; however, the king rarely exercises his veto.
After the king approves the new council, the councilors and king vote on which member heads each ministry. Councilors typically remain in their position during their entire term, but occasionally they have been replaced due to death, resignation, or expulsion by the king.
The council is in session from Plantfete to Harvestfete. (And the social season coincides with this period.) The council stays in session outside this period if issues remain unresolved or foreign dignities are in Ormas. When in session, the council meets every seven or eights days unless an emergency meeting must be called.
When not in session, each councilor receives one of thirteen linked communication mirrors, so they can meet from their country estates if needed. Enchanted by the royal witch, the councilors’ mirrors must be renewed once a year. Councilors also use these communication mirror to attend meetings if they are away from Ormas while the council is in session.
