The Geography of Calatini
When writing, I like to have a general idea of distances and times between places. However, my drawing ability is pathetic enough to make a cat laugh, so I cannot create anything approaching a map, but I can create a rough approximation.
Calatini is roughly 1400mi high and wide, around the size of the main body of Alaska. (In comparison, the Tsarkan Empire is roughly 1600mi high and 2700 wide, around the size the continental US.)
Calatini is bounded by the following features: the Walle to the north, the Tsarkan Empire to the south, the D’vark Mountains to the east, and the Envel Ocean to the west.
Calatini has 12 duchies. (For more details about them, read these posts: Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, Central.)
Ormas, Calatini’s capital and largest port, is in the northern part of the Merrilea duchy, about the center of Calatini’s coast.
The Nightmara Plains are on the southern border of the Golddell duchy, which makes them a significant part of the defense against the Tsarkan Empire.
Below is approximately how many miles that can be traveled in a day. These distances are halved if the terrain is rough.
- Travel per Day by Type:
- On Foot = 10mi
- Household Caravans = 10mi
- Merchant Caravans = 15mi
- Regular Horses = 25mi
- Stagecoaches = 30mi
- Nightmara = 40mi
- Couriers = 60mi
- Rivers = 10-40mi (upriver-downriver)
- Ships = 50-100mi
Since they are both around the center of their borders, Ormas and the center of the Nightmara Plains are around 920mi apart (as the crow flies.) That would take 23 days to travel by nightmara, but the travel time is actually 25 days since the roads are not perfectly straight. (The terrain is generally moderate, unlike in eastern Calatini.)
The distance between Ormas and the recently unearthed ore in Magehaven is around 650mi (again, as the crow flies.) That takes riders on regular horses 29 days to travel (generally moderate terrain: 26d if straight + 3d since not.)
