The Story of Summer
In honor of the first day of summer, I wanted to share some summertime events and customs of Calatini.
For worshippers of the Goddess or the Twins, summer starts with a holy festival on the summer solstice—Summerday or Lord Day, respectively. Summerday celebrates fertility, while Lord Day celebrates masculinity. Worshippers of the Sea God must wait for their festival until mid-summer: Neaprevel celebrating bounties revealed by change.
The king’s summer masquerade is the most exclusive summer event in Calatini. The annual ball has been held for the past four generations.
The court’s social season lasts during spring and summer while the council is in session (from Plantfete to Harvestfete.) Then nearly half of court leaves Ormas and returns to their country estates.
The harvest begins toward the end of summer; however, Harvestfete celebrating it is held on the first day of autumn.
For the characters, Wren’s natalday occurs mid-summer, and on her fifteenth she receives a charmed pen from Kit. Kiera rescues Wren and Hawke from the docks the summer eleven years before The Enchanted Bird. Kiera also meets Devon at the king’s summer masquerade. Annalise’s natalday is Summerday, and she and Dare form their secret soulbond on that day as well.
