Unexpected Gifts
While writing, characters and events can surprise you. To me, it sometimes feels like I’m being possessed by my characters. It’s one of the best parts of writing a story—other than plotting ways to torment my characters. 😉
When I began The Enchanted Bird, I purposely had Hawke’s eldest brother already married and living his happily-ever-after. It felt more realistic for some of the characters of the current generation to already be settled.
But then, Wren needed to write a play celebrating the upcoming birth of Aragon and Selena’s first child, and she mentioned they had met in a brothel. Why and how the heir to a wealthy duke met his wellborn wife in a brothel was intriguing to say the least.
So I determined a bit more of their backstory; Selena had fled to the brothel to escape her wicked uncle after her parents died. Then I moved on and wrote the rest of The Enchanted Bird.
I continued on to The Nightmara Affair about King Devon and Kiera. As Devon’s best friend, Aragon appeared more often in this novel than the previous one, and so did Selena. By the end of Devon and Kiera’s story, I knew I had to go back and write Aragon and Selena’s.
So now I’m writing their story as a novella to introduce the world of Calatini. It features a wicked uncle and his black witch, a meddling (but well-meaning) mother and father, and an irresistible attraction between a bold lady and a chivalrous gentleman.
Aragon and Selena’s story doesn’t have a title yet, but I know exactly where they end up. Although I’m sure there will be surprises on the way! I’m looking forward to them.
